Near the mountain there is a village called Shiryaevo. It was firstly mentioned in the documents dated back to 1647. Most likely the village received its name from its location - it is situated in the wide mouth of the largest and most extensive ancient valley of Zhiguliovskie mountains. The name means something wide and broad. For a long time Shiryaevo village was the place for the short rest of boatmen.

Here in Shiryaevo the famous Russian artist Iliya Repin worked on his famous painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga", depicting people pulling the boat that was typical for Russia in those time.
